Mark Your Calendar: Garland’s Best Community Events

One of the most wonderful aspects of living in Garland is our community’s commitment to bringing people together through events and celebrations. Throughout the year, there’s always something happening—festivals that celebrate our culture, events that benefit our community, and gatherings that simply remind us why we love this place.

The Event Culture

Garland’s event calendar reflects our community values and diversity. You’ll find events celebrating different cultures, seasons, and interests. Some events have been happening for decades and are beloved traditions. Others are newer initiatives responding to what residents want.

What unites them is the sense that these events are for us, created by us, reflecting who we are.

Seasonal Celebrations

Throughout the year, different seasons bring different events. Spring brings the Wheels of Hope Car Show in late April, bringing classic cars and community giving together. The Urban Flea Market returns at Downtown Garland Square every second Saturday from May through November. Summer features outdoor concerts at Downtown Garland Square and park gatherings at our 60+ parks. Fall celebrates harvest and the transition to cooler weather with festival programming. Winter brings holiday celebrations and festive gatherings throughout our neighborhoods.

Each season in Garland offers reasons to get out, connect with neighbors, and celebrate together at venues like the Curtis Culwell Center and our various community spaces.

Cultural and Heritage Events

Garland’s diversity is one of our greatest assets, and our event calendar reflects that. Events celebrating various cultural heritages bring community members together, educate others about different traditions, and create spaces where cultural identity is honored.

These celebrations are open to everyone. They’re chances to experience new cultures, try different foods, enjoy different music, and understand our community’s diversity more deeply.

Family-Friendly Activities

Many Garland events are specifically designed with families in mind. Face painting, kids’ activities, rides, entertainment, and food vendors make events appealing to young people. Parents appreciate having wholesome community activities to enjoy together.

Family-friendly events create memories and traditions. Kids look forward to attending year after year. They’re opportunities for families to be out together and for neighborhoods to bond.

Outdoor Concerts and Performances

Music brings people together like few other things do. Garland hosts outdoor concerts throughout warmer months—in parks, at downtown venues, and at community spaces. These range from classical to rock to jazz to cultural music.

Bringing a blanket or chair, packing a picnic, and settling in for an evening of live music is one of life’s simple pleasures.

Farmers Market Seasons

Beyond weekly farmers markets, special farmers market events happen throughout the year. Holiday markets, special vendor events, and themed market days create excitement and draw community members.

Farmers markets aren’t just shopping—they’re community gathering spaces that build connection.

Holiday Celebrations

Throughout the year, Garland celebrates various holidays with community events. Holiday-specific festivals, parade celebrations, and cultural holiday observances happen throughout the year.

These celebrations honor traditions while creating shared community experiences.

Festival Highlights

Garland hosts various festivals throughout the year celebrating themes like art, music, food, heritage, and seasonal changes. These festivals often include vendor areas, stages with performances, food trucks, kids’ activities, and more.

Festivals are full-day or weekend events where you can spend time exploring, discovering local businesses, enjoying live entertainment, and connecting with your community.

Community Involvement

Many Garland events exist because community members volunteer to organize them. If you’re interested in getting involved—whether through volunteering, participating, or attending—there are numerous opportunities.

Volunteering at community events is a great way to meet people, contribute to your community, and have fun together.

Supporting Local Businesses

Community events often feature local businesses, artists, and vendors. Shopping at these events directly supports our local economy. You’ll discover new favorites and support entrepreneurs in the process.

Many community members intentionally support local events because they know the money stays in Garland.

Free and Low-Cost Options

Most Garland community events are free or very low-cost. Parks and Recreation and various community organizations prioritize making events accessible regardless of income. Food and activities might require small purchases, but attendance is typically free.

This commitment to accessibility means everyone in Garland can participate.

Planning Your Year

Take time to explore what’s on Garland’s event calendar. Visit the Parks and Recreation website, check community calendars, and look for announcements. Mark your calendar for events that appeal to you.

Then show up. Bring family or friends. Explore. Enjoy. Connect.

The Bigger Picture

These events aren’t just entertainment—they’re the glue that holds communities together. They create shared memories. They build relationships. They remind us that we’re part of something bigger than ourselves.

When we attend community events, we’re voting with our presence for the kind of community we want to live in. We’re showing that we value coming together, celebrating together, and building connections.

Garland’s event calendar is rich and diverse because our community values bringing people together. That’s something worth celebrating, and all year long, we have the opportunity to do exactly that.
